NEWAYGO COUNTY1 S TOKENS by Terry Wantz #138
Until 1836 Newaygo County area was inhabited by Indians, . wild animals, and a few white trappers. In that year other men came for another reason. They recognized the bounteous p.ssets the territory offiered, Newaygo became an official county in l85l.
By 1837 the woods began to ring with the sounds of axes and falling trees which heralded Americas epoch-making Industry - lumberinf Lumbering drew people like magnets.' First 'there was Newaygo and Croton, Then appeared Fremont Hesperia, Grant6, White Clpud, and a dozen more now forgotten villages. Roads were built to carry logs and all kinds of supplies. These roads brought families who settled on farms to make a new life. Lumbering was a winter job and farming was summer work.
The visitor to Newaygo County can find reminders of its history - silvered white pine stumps, crumbling chimneys of an old homestead, clusters of lilac bushes once the pride of a pioneer woman, and the raised and even bed of foliaged silent earth which once supported the ”iron horse,”
So the next time you pick up a token to look at, don’t just thinl about it as a token, but a small bit of colorful history from somewhei , Some of tho colorful history of Nowavgo County is as follows :

ANNUAL MICH-TAMS MEETING
A doubly "Warm" mooting was had on Nov 29th in connectidn with the MS NS state convention. The small room was well heated, and the exchange of greetings among many exonumists was friendly. Among the VIP1 s in attendance were John J Pittman #2, George D Ratio #12, and James J Curto #5.
Mich- TAMS proxy Don McKelvey chaired the ovent. Also at the head table were Secretary Alice Pcnzes and Treasurer Ray Olson. Ray gavo the treasurer’s report showing a balance on hand that date of *li>289.63.
The special Mich-TAMS AWARD was on display, and discussion was held as to the manner in which it would, be awarded at that show. It was decided that it would bo given to the best display, by a Mich- TAMS member, of either tokens or medals. Pittman, Ratio, and Curto wore asked to bo the judges for that award.
It was discussed that 'Kich-TaNS have a logo on part of the Kalamazoo State Show Medal, or possibly a logo on a separate unusual spocial item. Discussion was tabled.
At the close of the mooting Mrs. Paul Cunningham, on behalf of Mario Johnson, extended an invitation to all Mich-TAMS members to attend a sixth summer picnic bourse to be held at the farm home of Bill & Marie Johnson, Clinton Mich, on July 25 1976.
Winner of the special Mich-TAMS AWARD was Don McKelvey of Port Huron with his tokens. MSNS AWARD winners were, in Class 5 Medals"
2nd place Chester Clark, and 3^d Mrs. Alice Anderson. In Class 6 Tokens, Ray Olson captured 1st, and McKolvoy 2nd.
BOB FOWKES #Lj_5l-J placed 2nd in the MSNS Junior Literary Award.
MORE ENCASED DOLLARS
The item in the October Junk Box describing the encased dollar brought considerable response.
LARRY FALATER #210 reports he has with the same rim, but the date of his dollar is 1889 Instead of the 1878.
' Another 1889 dollar in uncirculated condition, and th e same Buick rim, appeared on a dealer’s table at the MSNS show priced at |>21.50.
TOM WALL #h.68 of Independence MC renorts having seen one some years ago owned by a widow of an East Alton IL Buick dealer. It was given out as a. Buick promotion about 1955.
AGrIIAR WAELBERG #ij.03 in Calif writes that he has two, an 1899 and a 1900, but they are not Buick. These rims are aluminum, DRIVE A CAR THAT’S ALIVE/DX SUPER B0R0N//DX SHOWCASE STATION/1963. Agnar also has an encased brass token, .aluminum rim reading 4-th ANNUAL ELECTRICAL/ PROGRESS EXPO S IT IOIT / / PLUG IN ON CHEAP ELECTRICITY/GET MORE OUT OF LIFE, THE token reading YOUR/ELECTRIC/PENNY/BUYS MORE, reverse the same.
PETE HARTLEY #18 writes that there is a second Buick encased dollar that has a different obverse saying YOU CAN PUT YOUR BOTTOM DOLLAR ON 194-0 ,lRED CURTIS.” Pete also states that he believes the encased Canadian dime issued by Buick is even scarcer.
DONALD M STEWART #182 in Calgary Alberta writes that he has a Buick encased Canadian Silver Dollar 1939? TOU CAN BET YOUR BOTTOM DOLLAR ON BUICK III I94.O/H J CARMICHAEL/ /WHEN BETTER AUTOMOBILES ARE BUILT/BUICK WILL BUILD THEM, Don also has a 1939 dime encased the same way. Don says "Carmichael was the Gen I-lgr of GM Canada Ltd at tho time of issue - the 10/ isstic is scarce hut the Canadian dollar issue is rare. A Sudbury garage put one out for Pontiac (same ad agency) with an encased 194-0 cent/ I have another BET YOUR LAST CENT ON PONTIAC IN 194.0//TAKE A RIDE AND YOU’LL BUY.”

If • anyone has any other- tokens , old pictures-, Civil War pins and ribbons, or dog licenses 1926-28-29~32-33~ 3l4.-6O-6b.-65 from Newaygo County, which you would part with for the Newaygo County Historical Museum, please send them or write to Terry E. Wantz, Pres. Newaygo Co. Historical Society, 322 N. Darling, Fremont Mich I4.9l4.i2*
If anyone has any such tokens, unlisted in this article, and does not wish to part with them, please send the information to Terry so they may be recorded there.
EDITOR TS ADDITION: We are grateful to Terry Wantz for this most informative listing, A good article usually stirs one to "find/ out more " and this one did. -I quickly scanned my 1855 Michigan map, noted that Newaygo County had 36 square townships, many of them still unnamed. Only 1 town was on that map. It was Newaygc and showed as the County Town (county seat). Brooks Twp was the east half of one "square" and the west half of another. The name Bridgeton covered three full town¬ ship squares and three half ones. Everitt covered three, Big Prairie covered four, and Ashland two. The other squares and half squares were yet unnamed.
Ifr a 1905~atlas Newaygo was still the county seat, the whole county had 17,673 people - 47 establishments - §270,136 invested - and a value of all products of §444>3-80» Croton had a postoffice but only 59 people, Hesperia and Brunswick straddle the west county line. Other recent listed postoffices include //// Biteley, Brohman, and Grant. Current roadmaps show a- large part of Newaygo County to be In the Manistee National Forest, and show small towns and burgs to be Lilley, Hawkins, Woodland Park, Woodville, Ramona, Aetna, Reeman, Brookside, Bishop, Oak Grove, Bridgeton, Croton, Ashland Center, and Ensley Center.

A CLOWN IN ENGLAND
Two collectors have enlightened us as to the small token mentioned In the Oct/75 Junk Box, page 4. This amall good-for with the simple jirfr ;ord CLOWN was a puzzler.
From Calif, came the letter from AGNAR WAHLBERG #403 who states ’’a similar token was sent In to TAMS Maverick Column some years ago, and recently was attributed to game machines used in England. I have

several of them, as do other circus collectors I knot*, and we are agreed jt is a type of vending machine' token and used in England.”
